July 30, 2010 - Adieu Mikael Cantave
OTTAWA, Canada - Mikael Cantave, from our 96 Boys team, will soon be packing his bags for a journey to FC Nantes, one we know will take him to new heights in his soccer career. He will compete with 18 other boys for one of 12 spots in the renowned FC Nantes Football Academy. If successful, he will be offered a full-time professional contract to join the Academy in March 2011. From there on, the sky is the limit.
Mikael is pictured below in a pre-game send-off last Saturday at Claudette Cain Park. This was his last home game before leaving for France on August 10.
We wish you well Mikael. May you know that you will always have a home here at FC Capital United, but we hope you will not need to visit us any time soon.
July 27, 2010 - Beloved coach Raz earns National B coaching license
OTTAWA, Canada - The ever-humble, much-beloved coach, Raz El-Asmar, recently earned another coaching stripe, receiving his National B coaching license. This is a great honour for Raz and another huge win for the Club, whose players benefit from his tremendous coaching expertise, experience and pure passion for the game.
The optimist Raz was more hopeful than confident about his prospects for getting his National B license. But Raz, we never, ever had any doubt. Congrats to a true gentleman, soccer colleague and Club ambassador!

July 8, 2010 - Men's team returns from 6v6 Budweiser Cup in South Africa
PRETORIA, South Africa - The Capital United Men's Team returned from the trip of a lifetime - the Global Beer Championship, played in a FIFA World Cup Stadium, Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. After winning the Canadian championship in Toronto last month, the team earned the right to represent Canada in South Africa where they competed against other countries.
On the warm-up day, they beat Germany 7-1. On Canada Day, they were ranked 2nd after the round robin phase. They beat Vietnam in a 1-0 thriller in the first game, South Africa 3-0, and then China 4-0.
In a semi-final rematch vs. Vietnam, they lost 1-0 in a hard fought match. That loss was difficult to accept, but they can hold their heads high. They won more games and scored more goals than each of the other 11 countries, except Brazil (which tied with Vietnam).
Apparently, the team represented us well at the Budweiser hospitality tent, which was likely worthy of an award. They even got to watch a World Cup match, only seven rows away from the action. More importantly, check out those smiles, and the Cap U scarf and shirt in the photo below. Well done guys!
