Why Send Youth Players Outside of Canada?

This is an excellent question. The answer will depend a little (well, ok, a lot) on who you ask.

At Capital United, we believe the football world outside of Canada has much to show us, and our players in particular. Maybe in time, soccer in Canada will grow to the point where it becomes a passion, where it is part of our cultural fabric, where the pursuit of soccer excellence is like a religion. We sure hope so. We will always do our part to make that happen.

In the meantime, we truly believe that you need to travel to parts of Europe, South America and even the US to really understand what soccer excellence and passion are all about. It is not about the competition. There is plenty of good competition here in Ontario and Quebec already. There are many other important benefits.

These trips immerse our youth players in the soccer mosaic of other cultures. They begin to understand the deep roots that soccer has in these countries and in local communities. They learn about its enormous impact on economies and societies. They see, first hand, the pride that people have in their soccer heroes. They learn how soccer becomes a way of communicating and connecting with others across the globe, no matter what language they may speak. Most importantly, they can benchmark where they are in their own soccer development relative to their peers in other nations.

This is where these trips really hit home. Our young players have a chance to revisit their goals in soccer. Stars in our local leagues get to train with others their own age who play the beautiful game on a whole other level, with remarkable skill, vision and athleticism. For some, this pushes them to sacrifice even more in order to get that much better. Others remain content with the knowledge that they can continue to develop their game and simply enjoy what it has to offer for the rest of their lives.

International Program at a Glance

Our International Program has included trips for boys and girls over the years to France, Norway, Spain, Romania and parts of the US. Each one targets different objectives for different players of different abilities.

In 2001, we began what has now become an annual journey to the Northwest of France to participate in the Mondial Pupilles de Plomelin, a soccer tournament for U13 Boys. This event hosts 72 teams that come from four different continents. As part of this trip, our players start in the Nantes Region where they participate in friendly games and training sessions at the FC Nantes, Centre de Formation. This annual trip has helped forge a strong alliance between FC Capital United and FC Nantes.
